Congratulations! Congratulations! Congratulations! The first season of the Scumbag System donghua is now available to stream on Crunchyroll! With this acquisition, all three Mo Xiang Tong Xiu donghua adaptations are available on one of the world’s most popular anime streaming services.
Scumbag System is an animated adaptation of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s danmei novel series, The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System. The series was produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures and iQIYI, and animated by studio Djinn Power. It is the only series of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s famous trio (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Heaven Official’s Blessing) to be animated fully in 3D. Originally premiering in September 2020, it ran for a total of 10 episodes and completed its first season in October 2020.
A second season was announced and a trailer for it was released in August 2021, but no further news has come from the production team since. The first season ends with Luo Binghe’s fall into the Abyss; making it quite the cliffhanger to leave off on.
Crunchyroll provides the following synopsis of Season 1:
After cursing the novel Proud Immortal Demon Way, Shen Yuan finds himself in the book as the scumbag villain Shen Qingqiu. To avoid the grim fate that awaits his character at the hands of his apprentice, Luo Binghe, he’ll have to befriend and transform Luo Binghe’s view of him. But his retcon journey to become worth redeeming won’t be easy—there’s a plot system designed to stay the novel’s course!
Streaming is available in the original Chinese audio with subtitles in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, and Italian. No dub has been announced.
Crunchyroll has both seasons of the Heaven Official’s Blessing donghua (link: Season 1, Season 2) available to stream on their service with dub and sub options, as well as all three seasons and spinoffs of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (link: Master of Diabolism, Master of Diabolism Q). They also have several other danmei adaptations available, such as priest’s Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire and The Defectives.
The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System (人渣反派自救系统) is a danmei series by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (also known as MXTX). Its original novel began serialization on jjwxc in 2014 and ran for 81 chapters (plus 20 extra chapters). The novel inspired a donghua and a cancelled manhua.

The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System was initially picked up for English release in 2021 by Seven Seas Entertainment alongside its fellow two Mo Xiang Tong Xiu works, and saw staggering success on sales charts; notably being the only series of the trio to place on the New York Times Best Seller List with every volume. In light of this achievement, Seven Seas announced in May 2025 that they would be re-releasing the series in deluxe hardcover format.
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu has also written two other hit danmei series that are available in English: Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (魔道祖师) and Heaven Official’s Blessing (天官赐福).
