To celebrate the upcoming launch of The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System hardcover boxset from Seven Seas Entertainment, Canadian bookseller The Beguiling announced a very special event: the Toronto Danmei Symposium!
Where, When, and How of The Danmei Symposium
The danmei-centric event is hosted and sponsored by The Beguiling, and will be held at the Lillian H. Smith Branch of the Toronto Public Library. The event hours are 12PM to 4:30PM EST on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
The Toronto Danmei Symposium is free to attend, and advance registration is required. The event page launched with an attendee cap of 100, which was reached within two days of the event’s announcement on January 30—a feat not altogether unexpected from a fandom as passionate as Scum Villain‘s.
Those who missed registering at the initial launch are encouraged to join the waitlist. The event’s organizers have since confirmed with DanmeiNews that they will soon be opening a second wave of registrations, which will first pull from the waitlist and then make any remaining spots public. Everything is first-come, first-serve, so if you’re interested in going, get on the waitlist now!
Anyone who is registered for the event will be guaranteed a seat at the various panels. The library will also have rush lines, meaning any who did not register will be able to line up, and after all registered attendees are seated, those in the line will be allowed inside until capacity is met.
The Beguiling has not yet shared whether they have plans to record or stream the event, but representatives from DanmeiNews will be in attendance to report on the various panels.
Freebies and Purchases
Event attendees will receive free Scum Villain photocards illustrated by fans of the series. Attendees who present proof that they preordered the Scum Villain hardcover boxset from The Beguiling will receive a full set of photocards, along with an additional freebie. This gift will also be offered to those who buy a boxset at the event itself.
The Beguiling will have a variety of books from different danmei publishers available for purchase at the event, and plans to have a raffle for book giveaways.
Seven Seas Entertainment themselves will have their own set of exclusive freebies available at the event for those who purchase Scum Villain or any of their other danmei books.
Both the freebies and books for sale will be available throughout the entire event or until supplies last.
Events and Panels
To compliment all the freebies, a crafting area will be set up for attendees to have fun decorating their cards and trading them with others.
There will be signings at the event with Ruthie—official danmei artist for several Seven Seas Entertainment series—as well as several artists who contributed to the two Scum Villain fanbooks, Another Peak and Another Peak: After Dark.
Four panels are scheduled throughout the day, and include a general Scum Villain series panel, a danmei fandom panel, an interview with Canadian danmei publisher Via Lactea, and interviews with translators, editors, rewriters, and artists who have done work with Seven Seas Entertainment on their English danmei releases.

[2:30] Panel 3: Fandom & Danmei (Worm, Wem, Ruthie Wang). A look into the online culture of danmei and fandom. A talk about the process of organizing and contributing to fanzines, fanfiction, and online reception from people who have organized and participated in various fan danmei projects, as well as overlap with other fandoms. Followed by Q&A.
[3:30] Panel 4: Interview with Seven Seas Entertainment staff (Ruthie Wang, Ami, Max Wilson, Ivy Fox, Suika, Pengie, Yuka). A chat with translators, rewriters, editors and illustrators from Seven Seas Entertainment, the biggest danmei publisher in North America. Exploring how Chinese Danmei novels get released in English through the team work of many members. Followed by Q&A.
The event will open by starting book sales at 12:00PM, and conclude with closing words from The Beguiling.

The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System (人渣反派自救系统) is a danmei novel by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, also known as MXTX. It began serialization in 2014 and ran for 81 chapters (plus 20 Extras), and is available to read in Chinese on JJWXC.
The series has received a donghua adaptation and a cancelled manhua adaptation.
The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System was initially picked up for English release in 2021 by Seven Seas Entertainment alongside its fellow two Mo Xiang Tong Xiu works, and saw staggering success on sales charts; notably being the only series of the trio to place on the New York Times Best Seller List with every volume. Mo Xiang Tong Xiu has also written two other hit danmei series that are available in English: Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (魔道祖师) and Heaven Official’s Blessing (天官赐福).
