The publisher provides the following synopsis for Vol. 1:

Is the Demon Venerable in seclusion to study cultivation manuals…or read romance novels?

Demonic sect leader, Wenren E, accidentally stumbles upon a romance novel featuring tragedy and plot holes. Most importantly, it seems to mirror his own world. In the novel, he is destined to die for the sake of a woman he doesn’t care about, driving his subordinate Yin Hanjiang’s descent into madness and destruction.

First of all… Why?! None of it makes sense to him, and he isn’t about to let it happen either. Armed with this forbidden knowledge, he decides to rewrite his own story—starting by saving Yin Hanjiang.

As they journey through bloodied battlefields, snowy wastelands, and illusionary realms, their bond deepens, shaped by loyalty, sacrifice, and something far more dangerous: love. Publisher Hai Tang Books originally announced this title in January 2025 as Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know, which is its more recognized English title in western danmei fandom. Hai Tang announced the change from “devil” to “demon” in November 2025 [Source: Twitter/X], and have since explained their rationale as follows:

We completely understand fans’ attachment to the original translation. The title was adjusted to better respect cultural context, more specifically, to avoid unintended Christian associations with fallen angels that come with the word “Devil.” In cultivation settings, “Demon” more accurately reflects the broader class of spirits and aligns more closely with the original intent of the story. This change was discussed with and approved by the author.

Demon Venerable is not the only representative from Hai Tang’s library that has seen a title change recently. In November 2025, His Highness the Fifth Prince Is Still Being Deceived was officially announced as His Fifth Highness Still Doesn’t Know, and Eternities Still Unsaid Till You Love Me briefly saw its second title change from Boundless Utterance to Words Left Behind. (At time of writing, the latter series has reverted to the name Boundless Utterance on Hai Tang’s official site).
