Seven Seas Reveals Cover for New Danmei Series THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CHIEF

Seven Seas revealed the cover for a new upcoming danmei series, There’s Something Wrong with the Chief by Yang Su. Both the cover and the black & white interior illustrations will be provided by artist Zolaida (Twitter/X, Bluesky).

There does not seem to be a Special Edition in the works for this series at time of writing, and so Vol. 1 will likely only be available in a single standard edition. Seven Seas releases Special Editions for the first volumes of select danmei series only—previously, they would release them with every danmei series’ final volume. Seven Seas has not publicly disclosed how they determine which series receive this treatment, but it may be decided in part by projected sales numbers and fan reaction.

Around the time of Seven Seas’ initial announcement in October 2024 that they had acquired the series license, the book’s author mentioned on their Weibo that the publisher had also bought the rights to produce an audio book—the publisher currently has a growing audio library for their Japanese light novels under the imprint Siren. Seven Seas made no comment or announcement regarding this particular topic, and no further news has surfaced in the interim. At time of writing, Seven Seas has not made any formal announcements about a release timeline or casting for any audio books of danmei novels.

Seven Seas has provided the following volume summary:

A tragic past and a deadly world of assassins spark a love that defies fate in this fan-favorite danmei series!

Xiahou Lian, the youngest assassin of the infamous Qiye Garden enclave, has infiltrated the prestigious Xie household on a vague but deadly mission. Posing as a servant under Xie Jinglan, the youngest son of the family, he bides his time, awaiting orders. But as the days pass, an unexpected bond forms between them—mark and assassin alike—throwing a wrench in Xiahou Lian’s plans. The decision he makes will land him in dire straits with the Qiye Garden, while Xie Jinglan walks free.

Two years later, their paths cross again in the Imperial Palace. Forced to walk a perilous tightrope of secrecy, both boys hide dangerous truths from one another. Something is terribly wrong, and they can both feel it. As one of those secrets spirals into mortal danger, an assassin from Qiye Garden—familiar and fearsome—arrives with an ultimatum that threatens to tear their fragile bond apart.
