On December 27, 2024, Monogatari Novels posted a statement to their Twitter/X account addressing the ongoing conflict with their prior publishing partner, BLoved Publishing. The dispute first became public in November 2024, upon word of the companies’ inimically parting ways with one other, and is part of a growing list of controversies involving both companies.
With only one of the many promised books having been published, and now a fight over their ownership, onlookers have been left to sort through the official statements, scattered complaints, and accusatory statements from all sides. It begs a considerably more simple question: What’s going on with Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing?

Who are Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing?
Monogatari Novels was founded in Spain in 2021, and specializes in the publication of licensed works translated into Spanish. In April 2023, the company announced it would begin publishing works in English. The following July, they announced their first danmei license—a manhua adaptation of The Silent Concubine. This news was followed up with their license of the baihe manhua Soulmate.
BLoved Publishing was founded in the U.S. in 2023, and specializes in publishing licensed works translated into English. The company was launched by Rachael Ayers, known by their online alias BLover. They own the North American license for the Korean novel series Dear Benjamin and its manhua adaptation of the same name, as well as the Japanese novel series, DEADLOCK.
The Partnership
In July 2023, the two companies announced a publishing partnership, wherein the two groups would work together to secure the licenses for several titles. Those titles included two danmei—the novel The Legendary Master’s Wife and the manhua for How to Survive as a Villain—along with two baihe novel series, Female General and Eldest Princess and Clear and Muddy Loss of Love.
“As many of you might have guessed at this point we have partnered up with @rachadg98 to bring more amazing titles in English. She is a tireless warrior for Chinese stuff and is helping us inmensely [sic] so please go check her out (and don’t bother her too much asking for licenses!)” [ Twitter/X source ]
Rachael Ayers—hereafter referred to as BLover—alleged that they had purchased the various collaborated licenses (example for the two baihe titles [ Video source (1) ]) with their own funds, and that Monogatari Novels would be acting as publisher for the works on their behalf. Without this financial investment, it is unclear whether Monogatari Novels would have been able to acquire the rights for the contested series on their own.
The below video provides an example from January 19, 2024. In it, BLover takes primary credit for the purchase of two baihe titles (Female General and Eldest Princess, and Clear and Muddy Loss of Love).

All right, my lesbian friends, you guys won big time today. With not just one, but two baihe titles that I’ve purchased the licenses to, and Monogatari Novels will be bringing to official English physical and digital translation. I have been hearing the lesbian community screaming and begging all the big-name publishers out there to please license baihe, and they have been unheard. So, I heard you, I heard you loud and clear. So I hope you guys are happy, I hope you guys are excited. If you guys didn’t hear what titles these are, here they are. The first one is called Female General and Eldest Princess, and the second is Clear and Muddy Loss of Love. Yeah, so. I hope this makes everyone happy, and I’m really excited to see these in physical and digital; officially in English. And yeah, spread the word.
Fan Translation Printing Controversy
Note: In the interest of clarity, “printing” in this context refers to the practice of sending PDFs/ePUBs of fan translations to on-demand print services to be professionally printed and bound into physical volumes.
Following the announcement of Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing’s partnership, fans raised concerns about Monogatari Novels’ promotional partners. These partners included BLover, as well as TikTok influencers Kpoplesbian and Queen of Yunmeng.

Before Seven Seas Entertainment acquired the English publication rights to the danmei novel series Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation in late 2021, both Kpoplesbian and Queen of Yunmeng posted TikToks encouraging fans to print unauthorized fan translations [ Image source (1), Image source (2) ]. They suggested printing options such as those offered by Barnes & Noble, which is a breach of the company’s terms and services regarding the copyright ownership of submitted materials. Their encouragement also went against Exiled Rebels Scanlations’ explicit prohibition on printing their fan translation, even before the official release was announced.
BLover also once posted a video of the copy they had printed through Barnes & Noble’s service [ Video source (2) ].

A Twitter/X user describes Kpoplesbian and Queen of Yunmeng’s previous endorsement of illegal distribution:
you mean to tell me the two people who were encouraging everyone to illegally download the mxtx fan tls and print them via b&n are now being recruited to work in licensing danmei titles…be fucking fr it hasn’t even been 3 years since this incident. THESE PEOPLE DO NOT RESPECT CHINESE TLERS OR FANS. no literally kpoplesbian had pdf files up, vids on ‘how to print ur own mdzs copy!’ and when ppl said she should take down the pdf links, she didnt…and then queen of yunmeng defended by saying stuff like its okay bc it’s impossible for the books to get an official eng tl
A Twitter/X user states:
quite the opposite actually! the tler said she was personally fine with fans downloading them for personal use, but printing was not condoned since fans were pay a third-party for the printing
The user then provides screencaptures of two statements from K of Exiled Rebels, who was the primary translator for the fan translation of MDZS in discussion. In these screencaptures, K provides the following comments regarding people sharing pictures of the printed versions they made of their fan translation:
saw something similiar in a mdzs facebook group a few months ago… don’t print out other people’s fan translations please!! apart from potential copyright issues, it’s just kind of rude and inappropriate….
printing paper copies via a third party still involves profit
Video source (2): Click to View Original Video and Accessible Text
“‘Wait, you printed your own volumes of MDZS?’ So I did this a long time ago, before it became a trend on TikTok, I guess. Before Barnes & Noble, like, shut it all down. It was done years before that. So the original translators of the novel were a group of scanlators called XL Rebel Scans or Scanlations. They have a website. They do mangas. They do manhwas. They do novels. And so they were the ones that first translated MDZS. And I started reading that novel on their website when they were still in the process of translating the whole thing. So I was reading chapters as they were coming out. But when they were doing that, they had made it accessible so that you could copy and paste the Word documents that they were putting out.
So I would transfer the Word documents over to a PDF, transfer it into a PDF, and then I uploaded everything onto Barnes & Noble Press and had them make hardcover physical volumes of the translations. That took a long time. So let me show you. So we have four volumes. Glossy finish of MDZS. This took so long because I was so anal. I went through and corrected all the grammatical errors that I saw. I also went and searched online to find pictures to go along with the story because I like to see pictures in books. So I did character profiles. It took months of work. And I think it turned out okay. I think maybe I should have formatted the text a little bit differently. At that point, I’d been spending like five months on this and I was like, I just want them in print. So I have pictures in the text from the donghua, manhua, and the live-action, that coincide with each of the chapters.”
When fans criticized these actions, BLover asserted that an individual who owned an official copy of a given title had the right to use unofficial translations for themselves, including using them for printing copies. [ Image source (3) ] They allegedly dismissed the wishes of fan translators as well as the legal implications, and engaged in a combative back and forth with users that worried some in the danmei community.

Blover2021
How did I encourage people to illegally download and print physical books?
[Redacted]
sorry if it seemed like i was insinuating this was what you specifically were doing, i included your video since that was the only video i could find that showed an example of the books that kpoplesbian and queen of yunmeng once promoted
Blover2021
So what exactly are you so heated about?
[Redacted]
it’s disrespectful to the publications and authors when the other two people who i mentioned in my tweet are the ones taking part in licensing more chinese titles despite having shown disrespect towards chinese translators and fans in the past
Blover2021
To clarify they aren’t “taking part” in licensing anything. I AM. They are helping to promote and spread the word of these newly licensed series. Is this not what we, as readers and fans of these titles want? So what exactly do you want out of outing people on social media?
[Redacted]
yeah working together with people who had no respect for the author+tlers by encouraging unauthorized printing of pdfs (which is also a liability for b&n since it’s not their own work, btw) even after the officials came out is not exactly a good look
[Redacted]
considering they were both claiming it was for “accessibility”, there should have been no reason for the pdfs to stay up after officials were announced—but several people said they were still up, so they haven’t shown any respect for officials. why would you work with them, then?
Blover2021
How have they not shown respect for officials? They own them!!! It’s actually none of your business why I choose to work with them.
[Redacted]
owning them is one thing, encouraging their following to print the books and keeping an unauthorized pdf copy in their links is another. and the latter is showing disrespect. sure, it’s none of my business, but people are telling you why it’s a bad idea and you refuse to listen
[Redacted]
it’s going to affect how people view the company, so if you want that, that’s fine! but don’t say people didn’t warn you lolol
Blover2021
What is a bad idea? Keeping copies of the original PDFs? Having them promote newly licensed series?
Blover2021
Awe your concern truly warms my heart. I’m so happy there are people like yourself out there who are so genuinely worried about a random stranger’s wellbeing and their business success
Monogatari Novels initially defended the actions of their promotional partners. When BLover, Kpoplesbian, and Queen of Yunmeng’s promotion of piracy was brought up in the Monogatari Novels public Discord channel, comments from Ankh (Monogatari Novels’ co-founder) indicated that they did not grasp why the issue was important, and that they believe piracy should be “expected.”
When users pointed out BLover’s promotion of piracy to Monogatari Novels on Twitter/X, Monogatari’s social media representative offered an erroneous rebuttal that EXR allowed printing of their Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation fan translation. Users corrected the representative’s misconception by providing screencaptures of the original EXR translator’s statement that they do not want the translation printed due to the exchange of money involved.
Monogatari’s social media representative handled the exchange in a manner that came across as unprofessional to some users: for example, by frequently referring to themselves in the first person (rather than using broad, depersonalized terms as a representative of the company), and by sharing personal information. Some users felt that the social media representative’s wording implied that it was fans’ responsibility to educate the company on copyright law. This painted a concerning picture: there appeared to be a lack of professional responsibility on Monogatari’s part, and it seemed a worrying parasocial reliance on fans was beginning to develop.

Oh it’s fine I’m not mad at y’all it’s just y’alls partner and the stuff she has said and the stuff that her partners have done has spit in a lot of fans faces especially Chinese ones and they are very angry and a the whole printing stuff was just disrespectful to the author And translators
Ankh, Monogatari Co-Founder:
Yes, that’s the gist of it.
Honestly, this is mind blowing to me because way worse shit has happened in the Spanish fandom and no one bats an eye lol
I guess it’s becausae [sic] piracy is to be expected.

They provide screencaptures of the original translator’s statement that they do not want the translation printed due to the exchange of money involved.
[Redacted], in reply to a Tweet from BLover asserting that Monogatari was aware of her behavior online and her printing of fan translations:
Amazing, thanks. @GatariNovels, do you also condone the reproduction of copyrighted works similar to the ones you’re licensing?
For example, what do you think of readers passing around copies of your eventual ebook releases?
Monogatari Novels, Official Account
Hey so from what I understand that was back when there were no official translations available right? I mean a lot of people got to this content through fan TL and when those works were officially released bought them.
[Redacted]
Thanks for responding!
do you think fan-translators have a right to their own work, even when they share it freely with the public, and for it to not be distributed and reproduced against their express wishes?
Monogatari Novels, Official Account
Didn’t the fan tls of MDZS say that it was fine to print it for your personal use? At least that’s what I recall but I might be mistaken.
[Redacted]
quite the opposite actually! the tler said she was personally fine with fans downloading them for personal use, but printing was not condoned since fans were paying a third-party for the printing

Oh I see. I didn’t know that as I switched to reading in Chinese since 2018-2019 and wasn’t up to date with fan TLs.

Further rebuttal of the erroneous claim that EXR allowed printing of their “Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation” fan translation. Monogatari’s social media representative seems to imply that it is fans’ responsibility to educate the company on copyright law.
[Redacted], in reply to Monogatari’s assertions regarding EXR allowing printing of their “Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation” fan translation:
They did not. Fan-translators are all too aware of the legal grey zone around fantls, most of them expressly forbid reproduction and distribution of their work so it stays in their control, when and if they choose to take it down as a courtesy in cases of official translation. But really, I was hoping this wasn’t something that needed to be explained to @GatariNovels.
Monogatari Novels, Official Account
Would you rather I ignored you? How can we learn if we don’t engage and get feedback from the fans?
Monogatari Novels, Official Account
At the end of the day we will commit many mistakes and obviously we expect fans to correct us so we can learn and do better in the future. We actively ask for your input precisely so we don’t go against the wishes of the fandom to which we belong to.
Users expressed disbelief at the company’s approach to social media, and became increasingly frustrated at Monogatari’s online representative.

The fan translation issue resurfaced in discussions after a TikTok Live on May 3, 2024, in which BLover encouraged their followers to save and print fan translations of the danmei series Ballad of Sword and Wine (commonly abbreviated as QJJ), and provided the necessary PDF to do so. BLover indicated this was done out of spite, as they had sought to acquire the license for Ballad of Sword and Wine under BLoved Publishing but was unsuccessful. (Seven Seas Entertainment announced their license for the series in September 2023.)
Video source (3): Click to View Original Video
“QJJ was on my list, top of the list. And literally on Monday, I was negotiating with the people for it. And then the next day my business partner came back with an offer and they were like, Oh, I’m sorry. It’s gone. Yeah. And we all know who took it. So, um, yeah, I was not happy. But I’m not sure actually when that’s releasing. Nobody report me because I don’t need Seven Seas on my ass. It’s okay. We’re a squad here. Nobody says anything. Although I don’t really give a shit because they’re kind of on my shit list. […] ‘I think she does want you to send her the PDF.’ Wait. Yeah, I have the PDF. And I also have the screenshots for the extra chapters that the PDF doesn’t have. So if you want them, I can send them to you so that you can read it. Because I am not a fan of waiting for that shit to come out. […] Yeah, I think I have all of them and I don’t think what what I’m doing is illegal, so it’s fine. Literally, I’m emailing right now. Although, actually, as a publisher, probably not a great thing to do, but whatever.
Like, I didn’t take down the fan translations of Legendary Master’s Wife because I didn’t want to deprive people of reading it. Well, it just frustrates me when, you know, before I was in publishing, when people licensed stuff they just kind of. They took down the fan translations, even though, like, there could be multiple fan translations. And if it’s not the one that they’re using… Like, for instance, for Heaven Official’s Blessing, I can understand taking it down off their website. But if it’s on other people’s website as a different translation, I don’t understand why they would need to do that. But, I mean, I understand it’s a money thing, but I think it’s a shitty thing to do. ‘We can email you for a QJJ translation?’ So don’t email my business account. Email my personal account. Let me write it.”
It is worth noting that, despite BLover’s implications that fan translators are forced to take down their translations, this has generally not been true. The relationship between fan translators and publishers is often symbiotic, and in many cases, fan translators take down translations willingly when a license is announced. This is out of a desire to show their support for the official release, and to adhere to a general code of ethics—fan translations are illegal in the majority of cases, and are justified among their creators as providing a product that is not available any other way.
During this same TikTok Live, it was also brought to readers’ attention that the summary for Dear Benjamin on BLoved Publishing’s website had been taken from a fan translator. It was being used by BLoved Publishing to advertise their upcoming release of the work; without permission from the original fan translator, and without credit to them. BLover confirmed that they had taken the summary from the fan translation, and stated that they had done so because they “can’t do shit for summaries” and had not read the full series before purchasing the license.
Video source (4): Click to View Original Video
“[…] Okay, so Dear Benjamin. Yes, the description on the website is from Novel Updates, because I can’t do shit for summaries. And I think a lot of people do that, is there a problem with that? Because I can do my own summary, but the thing is, is that I haven’t read the entire series, so I don’t know anything about it. I mean, I know about it because I read the manhwa up to whenever they stopped, but other than that, like, I can’t tell you what the rest of the novel is about. That’s why I bought the license, because I wanted to read the rest of the novel. Is that a sound way of buying licenses and deciding what to buy? No, but I’m selfish and I want it.”
On May 10, 2024, BLover posted on the BLoved Publishing Twitter/X account that the company did not condone fan translations when an official version exists [ Twitter/X source ]. This statement was met with skepticism from users in the replies.

The Monogatari Novels Logo
Also during Summer 2023, Monogatari Novels came under fire elsewhere. Some fans had raised concerns that the design of their company logo resembled the “rising sun” flag, a symbol that has become associated with Japanese imperialism and its associated historical implications.
This flag has long been a source of controversy in Asia due to its use during World War II and continued association with nationalist movements. There have been many incidents in recent history where “rising sun” symbols in media have been removed or censored for release in Asian countries [Web sources: 1, 2], as well as movements for the symbol’s ban from events like the Olympics [Web sources: 1, 2, 3]. While it is likely true that the resemblance to the “rising sun” symbol was unintentional on Monogatari’s part, it seemed egregious to some that a company specializing in content licensed from East Asian countries would not recognize the similarities.
Ankh, a co-founder of Monogatari, expressed skepticism about the claims that the logo resembled the “rising sun” symbol, and cited their background as a historian to support their position.

Concurrently, discussions in Monogatari Novel’s Discord server included strong defenses of the logo. Leaked screenshots indicate that some conversations may have contained inappropriate commentary that only furthered the accusations of intentional racism. The screenshots also suggest that certain statements made by company representatives and community members escalated the controversy. On August 4, 2023, Monogatari Novels took to Twitter/X to address the logo concerns in a set of now deleted posts [ Image source (23) ]:
“It has been brought to our attention that our logo is reminding people of the infamous Rising Sun flag and of Japanese imperialism. As advocates for the truth about the atrocitities [sic] and the tens of millions of death [sic] left at [sic] their wake we will change our logo accordingly. We never intended for people to remember the flag that was being used to commit these atrocities, basically the Nazi flag of Asia, and we are very sorry for the people who might have felt offended or emotionally hurt as a result. We categorically condemn Japanese imperialism.”
By this point, the dispute had also attracted the attention of Japanese nationalists, who began posting in Monogatari’s Twitter/X threads with denials of the atrocities Japan committed during WWII.

HELL NO????? Just because it reminds someone of something, doesnt mean they are the same thing AT ALL. They really saw a rising sun and went “IMPERIALISM”???????? It makes no sense to get a company to change their logo over a slight similarity.

We understand your point of view, however we believe the best way to prevent emotional damage to anyone whose family or country suffered at their hands is to change the logo. They have suffered enough, they should not have to suffer while enjoying their favorite media.

Monogatari Novels Partnership with Exiled Rebels Scanlations
On August 27, 2023, Monogatari Novels announced that the fan translation group Exiled Rebels Scanlations (EXR) would serve as the official translators for their release of The Legendary Master’s Wife. [source: 1, 2] EXR previously worked on an unofficial fan translation of the series, and Monogatari Novels stated they would be using EXR’s fan translation as the base for their release. This was not dissimilar to the approach taken by Seven Seas Entertainment in hiring multiple fan translators who had previously worked on the titles they intended to publish.
However, EXR is a contentious entity within the danmei community due to their past controversies, some of which include disputes regarding their fan translation of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. Notably, a member of the group (known by the handle Addis) publicly expressed dissatisfaction on EXR’s Facebook page when Seven Seas did not select their team to translate the official release of Grandmaster. This EXR group member would be participating in the release of The Legendary Master’s Wife as the editor.

preface: Again, I’m not mad another translator is doing the translation. I even expected it. But, when you offer the two other novels to the original fan translators, you best fucking offer it to all 3 original fan translators
Hey everyone, Addis here. I need to explain something to everyone because y’all don’t understand.
K’S TRANSLATION IS NOT THE ONE BEING PUBLISHED BY 7 SEAS.
K spent 2 years during high school translating GDC for fans. And what happened when it was officially announced to be published?
Fucking 7 seas asked Suika to do the translation, not us.
And what’s even more fucked up, is that Suika accepted without even asking us or approaching us. Neither did 7 seas.
BOTH OF THEM DIDN’T EVEN CONTACT US.
We had no idea GDC was being officially published until it was officially announced.
So please STOP CONGRATULATING US. IT PISSES ME OFF.
I think people kinda assume that there was some kind of secret deal made between us and suika and 7seas, but there wasn’t. We weren’t even sent an email, Tumblr, Facebook message ANYTHING. we are super easy to contact, but they didn’t do fucking jack shit. Just offered it to Suika. So fuck them.
And those of you asking us to not take our translation down, if you want to bitch anyone out, blame Suika and 7 Seas, because WE at least are going to be doing the RIGHT THING so that the author gets paid and the support.
I honestly don’t give a shit about GDC any longer. Those two entities made me hate the entire fandom.
At the beginning I was just going to never say anything, but you know what? K and I were really hurt over this. K lost sleep and she was so upset. Now she’s reconciled over it, but not me. I’m just even more pissed off.
YOU DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO HURT MY PEOPLE.
So fuck both of them personally. I will never support either. I’ll only support K and she wants to do the right thing by taking the translation down. I respect her decision, but still, I will never respect 7 seas or Suika and I don’t give a flying fuck if they know it.
K had nothing to do with this post, it was all me so don’t blame her for what was said.
I’m done. It’s not like anyone would have expected something else from me anyway. Like I say in our discord,
BYE DICKS!
Further to this, the designated translator for Monogatari Novel’s The Legendary Master’s Wife (known by the handle Rara) has publicly stated they are not a native speaker of English or Chinese. [source] Although that in itself is not proof someone isn’t fluent in either language, Rara is the only translator on the project and was tasked with re-translating their earlier fan translation of a series that spans over 700 chapters, with the expectation to release 5-6 volumes annually. [source] The pace of release and original source of the translation left many concerned about the quality of the book, as well as the treatment of the translation team that had been hired to produce it.
This combination of concerns has led to frequent accusations from users that Monogatari uses machine translation (MTL)—a process wherein text is fed into an automated translation service such as Google Translate. When asked to comment on the matter, Monogatari provided this response:
“Thank you for bringing up this concern. We have determined that this translator counts with [sic] sufficient proficiency in both Chinese and English to be in charge of this project. No MTL will be used for this title or any other title we publish.” [source]
On August 30, 2023, Monogatari Novels posted a preview of EXR’s revised translation for The Legendary Master’s Wife on their website. In response, a professional Chinese-English translator shared an analysis of the sample on Twitter/X, identifying 24 individual errors within the four pages provided. The issues included mistranslations of fundamental Chinese terms and phrases. [source]
On September 7, 2024, BLover claimed that the series had already been fully translated. [source]
Behind the Manga Podcast
Monogatari Novel representatives have appeared on the Behind the Manga podcast on two occasions. In both cases, they discussed various elements of their business, their opinions on the industry, and the struggles faced since their North American English debut.
June 2023
On June 26, 2023, Monogatari Novels representatives Ankh and Vlad appeared on the Behind the Manga podcast to discuss the company’s North American launch. [source]
Vlad, identified as the U.S. representative of Monogatari Media Editorial, expressed appreciation for the flexibility offered by Chinese rights-holders in adapting works for different markets; specifically bringing up the matter of altering or completely removing segments. He did not elaborate on the circumstances under which such changes would be justified.
“I think also like the on the Chinese end, they’re a little bit more open to different strategies. Like they’ve mentioned, like in other like book companies I spoke with, they’re like, yeah, if you want to add like a full word into the book or if you want to like chop up the book or remove segments, like that’s cool.”
During the podcast, Vlad also made a statement, seemingly in jest, about potentially organizing a group piracy effort for an out-of-print manga to which the company does not hold rights:
“We’ll see if we can get a system to print people one-off semi-bootleg copies or something in the future.”
September 2023
On September 26, 2023, Monogatari Novels representatives Ankh and Vlad appeared on the Behind the Manga podcast for a second time. [source]
A portion of the podcast was spent discussing the personal effects of the recent controversies on them, and the next topic of discussion was the backlash they had received for hiring EXR for The Legendary Master’s Wife. Ankh defended the decision, citing the group’s prior efforts to popularize the work in the West:
“The answer to that is because they’ve already worked so hard to make this, you know, this work, The Legendary Master’s Wife in this case, known in the West. Were it not for them, much less people would know about it. So, I think it would be unfair, after they’ve done such hard work, to at least not decide, sorry, to at least not try to talk it out with them, to be if they would be up, for fixing the mistakes in their translation, as well as for providing a better product with the help of a new freelancer. […] And, you know, each person is entitled to their own opinion, but we’ve got way more support for it than not, let’s just say. Of course, there were some people who were not happy with it, but at the end of the day, we can’t make everyone happy. When with one translation in the past, the company decided to redo the translation from scratch instead of using the fan translation or hiring the fan translator. And people were angry then too.”
When asked about the use of AI or machine translation (MTL) in published works, the representatives offered mixed views.
Vlad (Monogatari Media Editorial, U.S. representative): “I’ve seen what they’re coming out with now — they’ve got AI voice generation that can be used for visual novels that can do like, emotion, and almost like sentiment analysis. I think it’s a leap, but I think eventually — maybe not a light novel, but I think maybe something like an anime, when it can pull the emotion using sentiment analysis and understand a whole show in context and then put together a translation using a neural network. I think it can get a lot closer than what it is right now, because right now it’s not taking into account things like context that well. I don’t think it’s decades away; I think maybe in the next five to ten years we’ll have things that can do…maybe not like a deep story, but definitely like a slice of life, I can see being like…95 plus percent could just be machine translated and then just have an editor, ideally somebody who like knows Japanese and can go over it. To do a whole novel and understand the context, I think it’s gonna happen just based on like what type of stuff is being trained. But then I don’t know if we’ll have good output results, or like, you know, it’s only — there’s only so many examples of well-translated Japanese novels. I don’t know. I think it’s I think it’s tough because the language is so distant from English.”
Ankh (Monogatari Novels, co-founder): “If you want my opinion, as long as it exists as a tool and does not replace translators, and translators get paid the same, I think, yeah, if it provides the same quality, they should be able to use it.”
These remarks contrast Monogatari’s earlier statement on August 28, 2023, which asserted that AI or MTL would not be used in their releases, leaving the company’s stance on the issue somewhat ambiguous. [source] More recently, Monogatari Novels has continued to assert via responses on its Twitter/X account that the company does not use AI or machine translation in its publications.
The Baihe
Soulmate
On July 27, 2023, Monogatari announced its license of the baihe manhua Soulmate by Wenzhi Lizi, illustrated by Keran Bing. While the general response was very positive, some fans raised concerns about the promotional material, which referred to the main characters by only their given names; rather than using their full names (family name followed by given name) as is customary in Asian languages. Monogatari clarified that full names would be used in the work itself, and “we just put their given names in the synopsis to make it easier to recall.” [source]
The decision drew mixed reactions, with some perceiving it as a lack of respect for cultural conventions. Additionally, some commenters speculated that Monogatari’s move into baihe publishing had been driven by a desire to be the first in the North American market, as well as due to Soulmate‘s popularity. This prompted a strong reaction from the company’s co-founder, Ankh. Ankh’s response, posted to the company’s Twitter/X, has since been deleted, though a screenshot and transcript are below:

A deleted post from Monogatari Novels’ official Twitter/X:
It’s fine to criticise us and correct us on our mistakes. What I will not tolerate, however, is people telling us, telling me, that we licensed Soulmate due to it being popular. Soulmate helped me through a rough stage of my life and I decided to license it out of love for it.
It’s not only one of my favorite manhua, it’s one of my favorite stories altogether. Full stop. I am more than happy to receive criticism, that’s how we will improve. But I will not tolerate anyone insulting my passion for this work.
I’ve read it in Chinese, in English and I own the physical versions of the French and German edition, despite the fact I speak no German at all. I went out of my way to make an omnibus edition so it would be cheaper for everyone and thus attract more people to discover this amazing work. So please, do try to not speak without first asking. And enjoy this fantastic work while you’re at it.
It is standard business practice to pursue licenses for popular series with a large potential audience, so Monogatari pursuing baihe licenses on this basis would be in keeping with industry norms. This makes the reactions about Soulmate from both sides an oddity among more valid critiques.

REVENGE | BAIHE | SLOW BURN | CROSS DRESSING
The Luo River, a natural moat, cleaved the vast land into two realms – the Northern Jing and the Southern Wei. On one side stood a carefree Prince of the Grass Plains, once devoid of worries and sorrows. On the other, a lawful Princess, favored greatly by the Emperor.
A devastating war transformed the Prince of the Grass Plains into an orphan. She who had laid dormant for ten years had originally planned to become a sycophantic official, to manipulate the enemy kingdom into chaos, but she was appointed as the Fuma (Royal consort) at the Qionglin banquet.
How will this grudge from a fallen kingdom and devastated home will be settled? A revenge story filled with politics as well as an angsty romance!
Monogatari’s announcement post contained typographical errors in both English and Chinese. In addition to English spelling/grammar mistakes, they used incorrect pinyin for the term 长公主 (eldest princess); transliterating it as “chánggōngzhǔ” instead of the correct “zhǎnggōngzhǔ.” The former transliteration means “long princess.” [source]

The translator for both works was listed as Melts, who had previously worked on fan translations of these series. In contrast to previous announcements, this decision by Monogatari Novels was very positively received by fans familiar with Melts’ work on these and other projects.
The publisher had previously hinted at plans to release these two series in English as early as July 2023, which some speculated was while licensing discussions were still underway. Leaking or implying a license has been confirmed before the contract has been finalized may risk complications with the license itself, which raises concerns regarding professionalism.

once again, my original tweet never said anything about your business or doubted your love/appreciation (although your behavior has certainly given rise to doubt now)

BLover
Since y’all seem to know it all and how to run a business properly; better than anyone else then you guys can go ahead & start your own publishing company & license the titles “most” of the community want to see. Good luck to you.
BLover
I have invested all the money I have in funding the licensing of these titles for the danmei/baihe community but all I’ve received today has been hate, negativity & false accusations. I’m out of patience with this toxic community & I no longer wish to fund this business venture.

This allegedly led to BLover’s dismissal from their offline job. This Twitter/X post from BLover references the incident: [ Image source (37) ].
Child Vs. Critics
During these events, a user who heavily implied they were one of BLover’s young children began harassing critics on Twitter/X.
Other users strongly discouraged anyone from interacting with the alleged child out of concern for their online safety. BLover did not initially deny that the individual was their child, and defended their actions. A user called out the safety risks of allowing a child to become involved in a heated online argument with strangers on an emotionally fraught topic. Users urged the alleged child to disengage from the drama, and continued to press BLover to confirm or deny the alleged child’s identity. After backlash escalated further, BLover stated the individual was not their child and accused the other users of spreading misinformation.

drama related to this tweet i made. the person i’ve been clashing with on twitter got her child to come on here and take part in the whole situation

Stop spreading misinformation/lying on this platform. I never “got” her to do anything. She’s old enough to make her own decisions & have her own social media accounts.
BLover
When you people decided to bring this drama into my real life, & started stalking/harassing me at my place of work you got my family involved. Of course she’s going to find out.
BLover
Of course she’s upset that you people are threatening my job; one that I love, so it natural for her to feel outraged on my behalf. My children love & care about me & hate to see my job/livelihood being jeopardized by stupid twitter drama.
[Redacted]
i understand wanting to defend her mom, but as her mother, especially since someone crazy enough actually DID contact your irl work, i think you should advise her to stay off and provide support offline instead. i don’t have any interest in your personal life but other ppl might
[Redacted]
even if she is old enough to take care of her own online presence, that doesn’t mean you should just let her be exposed to people who are clearly at odds with you. i have a younger sister and i know for sure i would not want her to be involved, so why would you for your daughter?

if your child is joining the drama without your knowledge — i do not think you should be telling your children about beef online. so again, do better as a mother and stop acting like a child. (if this is not your child, perhaps you should report them to twitter for impersonation.)
BLover
Apparently you didn’t get the memo but one of you thought it was a smart move to bring this shit show away from social media into my real life; threatening me at my place of work! You think my kids are stupid? I’d bet they’re both smarter than all of you.

BLoved Publishing, publicly criticizing the author of “You’ve Got Mail: The Perils of Pigeon Post”; a danmei released by Seven Seas Entertainment.
[Redacted], quote-retweeting a post by Seven Seas promoting the release of “You’ve Got Mail! The Perils of Pigeon Post”:
Reminder that the author writes danmei solely for money reasons while simultaneously being both hompphobic [sic] and transphobic!!!
BLoved Publishing, official account, in reply to the above post:
True. Sadly I will have to skip this one [crying emoji]

BLoved Publishing, sharing comments from users criticizing Monogatari Novels for allegedly unprofessional behavior in their dispute with BLoved Publishing.
[Redacted]:
Sorry but PR is everything. A company that just shits on another company and publicly airs shit that should be solved behind closed doors vs one that doesn’t mention any of it except to reassure customers they’ll be getting their books, I know which one gets my business.
[Redacted]:
This is the most unprofessional thing I’ve ever seen. Your first priority should be your customers, no [sic] who owns the rights. BLoved has clearly always had the customers at the forefront. Even if you wind up with the rights in the end, you’re still scum.
[Redacted]:
We preordered titles from your website, you take payment for them right away and can’t even tell us that the release date had been pushed back. When we ask what’s going on you don’t give a proper explanation. Now all this drama with another publishing company makes everything [The tweet is then cut off by the character limit.]
Monogatari Novels faced criticism for taking a similar approach to their online marketing. The company representatives would speak of other publishers in negative terms while streaming, and would share messages from users doing the same. On the livestreaming platform Twitch, Monogatari Novels used a fan-made anti-Seven Seas meme as their backdrop. These streams have since been deleted from the account’s archive.

These types of interactions with their fanbase and the associated attacks on other publishers were seemingly a key part of the marketing strategy for both companies. This approach appeared to come to a head when the two would later clash. Supporters of both companies were quick to begin attacking the other, egged on by the company representatives via replies and shares.
Dissolution of the Partnership between Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing
Following the events of Summer 2023, production issues began to affect Monogatari Novels’ planned releases. The anticipated February 2024 publication dates for the How to Survive as a Villain and The Silent Concubine manhua passed without the release of either, as did subsequent estimated dates for other titles. Monogatari Novel’s previously active social media presence became sporadic, with only occasional posts apologizing for delays or announcing revised release dates that were also never fulfilled.
On April 28, 2024, Monogatari Novels posted on their Twitter/X account citing “serious challenges stemming from a situation that impacted our operations.” The company provided updates on all their titles, with none of their Japanese or Chinese licenses having yet seen successful English publications. Notably, several of these titles have been successfully released by Monogatari in Spanish. [source: 1, 2, 3]
In May 2024, multiple influencer accounts on TikTok began posting short reviews of the danmei and baihe books published by Monogatari Novels. The books were supplied by BLover, and all had the Monogatari Novel logos printed on them. [source: 1, 2] (Editor’s note: Spoiler warning for book content in the linked videos.)
On July 28, 2024, BLoved Publishing shared a post revealing the Volume 2 cover of The Legendary Master’s Wife—notably without Monogatari Novel’s logo. [source] Shortly afterward, Monogatari Novel posted a different version of the cover featuring their logo, without addressing BLoved’s post. [source] Both publishers listed their editions of the novels for preorder on their respective websites.

This situation drew attention and confusion from danmei fans, culminating in public statements from both publishers in early September 2024.
On September 7, 2024, BLoved Publishing declared sole ownership of the licenses for The Legendary Master’s Wife (Novel) and How to Survive as a Villain (Manhua) and stated that the baihe titles were “facing unresolved issues.” [source]
The following day, Monogatari claimed exclusive ownership of all four licenses in question and projected a release timeline of late 2024 or early 2025. [source] In the company’s official Discord server, a representative posted to reiterate that although a “joint adventure agreement” remained in place, Monogatari Novels alone had the legal contract for the licenses themselves. They stated that a legal representative would be contacting BLoved Publishing. [source]

Sept 7, 2024: BLoved Publishing makes a post claiming their sole ownership of The Legendary Master’s Wife (Novel) and How to Survive as a Villain (Manhua) licenses they had once allegedly shared with Monogatari Novels, and also stating that the baihe titles were “facing unresolved issues.”
We at BLoved Publishing regret to inform readers that due to unforeseen circumstances, the release dates for “The Legendary Master’s Wife” and “How to Survive as a Villain” have been delayed. Additionally, these titles will now be exclusively published by BLoved Publishing, instead of the initially planned joint release with Monogatari Novels.
Moreover, the Baihe novels “Female General Eldest Princess” [sic] and “Clear and Muddy Loss of Love” are facing unresolved issues. While Monogatari Novels is still managing these titles, final decisions on their future publishing arrangements are pending
agreement.
Our top priority is to ensure the delivery of the best possible translations of titles to our readers. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience and understanding as we address and resolve these challenges and issues. Further updates will be provided once more information is available.

Sept 8, 2024: Monogatari posts the following statement in response to BLoved’s statement the previous day.
To address recent claims, Monogatari Novels would like to inform its readers and friends of the following points:
Monogatari Novels holds the exclusive publishing rights and ownership of licenses in our name for the English translation of the following titles:
The Legendary Master’s Wife
How to Survive as a Villain
Female General And Eldest Princess
Clear and Muddy Loss of Love/JWQS
The Legendary Master’s Wife and Female General Eldest Princess [sic] will be published in the fourth quarter of this year, while How to Survive as a Villain and Clear and Muddy Loss of Love are scheduled for publication in the first quarter of next year.
We are working hard with full support from the authors, translators, and respective team [sic] involved to bring these works to life with the love and quality they and the community deserve.
Moreover, we recommend disregarding any comments on this matter that do not have our explicit approval.
BLover then shared a post from an unrelated user that said, “Who paid for these ‘exclusive publishing rights and ownership’ I wonder looool. Karma isn’t going to treat yall kind”.

The dispute remained publicly unresolved until November 27, 2024, when Monogatari announced the official termination of their partnership with BLoved Publishing. [source]. BLoved responded the next day, stating that legal proceedings were underway to determine ownership of the titles and asserting that no releases would occur until the litigation was resolved. November 27, 2024: Monogatari Novels posts to their official Twitter/X:

November 28, 2024: BLoved Publishing posts to their official Twitter/X:
BLoved Publishing values transparency and professionalism in all our business dealings. We wish to address the recent situation regarding the English release of four Chinese titles initially contracted in partnership with Monogatari Novels.
Bloved Publishing disputes recent communications by Monogatari Novels, and will be taking legal actions to address ownership and other issues with Monogatari Novels.
Until this matter is fully concluded, neither BLoved Publishing nor Monogatari Novels has the right to print or electronically distribute any of the four titles.
We remain committed to resolving this matter fairly and continuing to provide translations to our readers. Thank you for your patience and support.
For those customers who wish to cancel orders made on our website, you may do so by contacting us at contactblovedpublinshing@gmail.com [sic]
Preorders Post-Partnership
After the dissolution of their partnership, both companies continued to accept preorders for the contested titles on their individual websites. Third-party retailers (including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Walmart) also continued to allow preorders, and some showed conflicting publication credits.
During late Spring 2024, all third-party retail listings had their company credit changed from Monogatari Novels to BLoved Publishing. Around this time, BLoved Publishing began promoting these third-party retailers on their Instagram. [source] By late December 2024, most listings reverted back to Monogatari Novels, along with displaying new release dates in January 2026. Those dates contradicted the ones given by Monogatari Novels in their then-recent public statement (see below) until they were later updated on January 5, 2025.
On that same day, the option to preorder the books was removed from Monogatari Novel’s website, and all Chinese titles were delisted from BLoved Publishing’s. BLoved Publishing has offered to cancel preorders for those who ask [source], and stated that book orders would still be fulfilled if previously ordered from Monogatari Novels’ website [source].
The Most Recent Formal Statement
On December 27, 2024, Monogatari posted a new statement, which reiterated that they exclusively own the disputed series and are committed to fulfilling pre-sales. They included a statement that “the cooperation ended due to BLoved Publishing repeatedly engaging in behavior that Monogatari Novels found to be harmful.” It was not made clear if this was in response to the alleged harassment, the fan translation promotion, or the contention of license ownership. The company claimed May 15, 2025 as their new release date for The Legendary Master’s Wife, How to Survive as a Villain, Female General and Eldest Princess, and Clear and Muddy Loss of Love. [source]
As of this writing, BLoved has not formally responded to Monogatari Novel’s December 27th statement.
In response to comments on their December 27th post, Monogatari addressed the ongoing concerns about the use of machine translation (MTL), denying their Spanish releases had any MTL assistance.

In response to fan concern about Monogatari’s choice of translator for “The Legendary Master’s Wife” (discussed earlier in this article), Monogatari states their Spanish releases were translated by proficient translators and did not use MTL.

Early 2025
On January 30, 2025, Monogatari Novels posted photos of an initial batch of printed copies for the baihe series, Female General and Eldest Princess (Novel) Vol. 1. Notably, the books have different cover artwork and a different logo than the ones previously advertised by both Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing. The original cover continues to be promoted on the Monogatari Novels website without any disclaimers that it does not represent the final product.

On the new edition, only Monogatari Novels’ branding is present on the outside cover. The company has stated that this batch of books will fulfill initial preorders, while the previously announced release date of May 2025 remains for general release.
In a follow-up post, Monogatari Novels added:
For Silent Concubine and any other titles not already discussed in recent posts, please stay tuned for separate announcements. They’re coming!
BLoved Publishing initially made no statements about the release, only putting out a call for Korean to English novel and manhwa translators, as well as promoting their current and upcoming releases of the Korean series, Dear Benjamin, and the Japanese series, DEADLOCK.

This changed on February 27, 2025, when BLover publicly tagged Monogatari Novels in a series of messages on Twitter/X [source]. They called Monogatari Novels out for not informing customers that The Legendary Master’s Wife would not have the same cover art and book design that had been previously promoted. Monogatari Novels has not officially responded to this accusation at time of writing, but the accusation’s veracity is supported by the previously described release of Female General and the Eldest Princess Vol. 1. BLover also claimed that there would not be enough time for Monogatari Novels to release the books on the newly promised dates, based on the time required to ship to the distributor from printers in China, and for the distributor to deliver copies from there.
When another user pointed out past criticism of BLover, BLover replied by saying: “My attorney is documenting all of this, thank you for your posts and all the people who are commenting on them. It’s great supporting evidence for the lawsuit. So thank you for that.”
It was further confirmed via the BLoved Publishing account that there was an “active lawsuit” between their company and Monogatari Novels [source], which is later referenced in an upcoming video. The details of the lawsuit are not currently available. What followed was a series of back and forths with various users, including BLover sharing a screenshot of a private conversation with the owners of Monogatari Novels where they commiserate past drama and their shared history of fan translation. [source]
BLover also posted a TikTok in which they called out several detractors on Twitter/X, and stated their intent to sue particular users if any comments negatively affected their current licenses. [source] (Editor’s Note: Please be aware of harsh language used.) In this video, they shared a figure of $50,000 and liquidated stock assets that had allegedly been used to fund their licenses. They claim they are now in debt after their licensing business had been “stolen by Monogatari Novels”, which is why they have sued them.
The interactions culminated in various messages from their supporters being shared on the BLoved Publishing account, and then a post announcing they were moving to the social media platform Bluesky.
A Passion for Passion
On February 26, 2025, the BLoved Publishing Twitter/X account requested that fans of the Korean BL series Passion show their support for the series, and in doing so, inspire BLoved Publishing to license it. [source] They also sought suggestions for artists to illustrate the novel. [source]
In response, a user who was allegedly a member of the production team involved with Passion quote-reposted BLoved Publishing’s call to action. In a series of now deleted messages, they said the following:
“If Passion needs an English version, you shouldn’t expect BLoved Publishing to obtain the translation license. Anyone could, but this publisher absolutely CANNOT. They DO NOT DESERVE IT, and I believe no one would want Passion to be caught up in unnecessary controversies with it gets published.”
“[…] You should understand why—not all—but many people don’t trust or want you to have the Passion license. The controversies you’ve caused have damaged your credibility. The Taiwanese and Korean versions have already done a great job publishing the books, so no one wants the English version to be handled poorly.
You were criticized and in response to people’s concerns, you reacted even worse—by leaking private conversations. As a publisher, this was an extremely unwise move, and it makes me even more reluctant to see Passion end up in your hands.
Anyway, I trust Yuuji-num and Horizon*’s judgement. If you’re truly capable of convincing them to trust you with Passion, then I should reflect on myself and offer the most sincere apology possible.
But as of now? No, no. You’re too unprofessional, and honestly, I’m more disappointed than anything.”
*Yuuji-num is the author of Passion, while Horizon is the original publisher for the webtoon.
So What Does This Mean For the Books Now?
As of March 2025, Monogatari Novels has confirmed it is proceeding with the publication of the previously contested and delayed titles:
- The Legendary Master’s Wife
- Female General and Eldest Princess
- Clear and Muddy Loss of Love
- How to Survive as a Villain (manhua)
- The Silent Concubine (manhua)
- Soulmate
Three titles that were previously a collaboration between Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing—The Legendary Master’s Wife, Female General and Eldest Princess, and Clear and Muddy Loss of Love—will allegedly all have different cover artists and book designs than were previously advertised. Monogatari Novels has not officially announced or disclosed these changes, and continues to promote the books on their website with the original covers, despite already releasing Female General and Eldest Princess Vol. 1 with a new design.
On March 13, 2025, Monogatari Novels shared a new English cover for How to Survive as a Villain Vol. 1, but quickly deleted the post. The shown cover had misaligned text, and the author’s bio in Spanish. [ image source ]
All the first volumes of the series above are currently scheduled to come out in May 2025, with preorders available on most major book platforms.
BLoved Publishing appears to have no further connection to the titles above, but has stated that they are currently in the process of suing Monogatari Novels. None of the covers and book designs they were involved with creating will be used in the upcoming editions. BLoved Publishing continues to publish other books they have licensed and pursue new titles, while recently launching a Patreon to seek further funding.
DanmeiNews will continue to report on updates regarding the publication status of the danmei and baihe books referenced in this article.
Update, May 2, 2025: All Monogatari Novels releases have been pushed back to release dates throughout November 2025.
Update, October 18, 2025: All Monogatari Novels releases have been further delayed to March 3, 2026.
Update, December 17, 2025: Monogatari Novels appears to no longer be affiliated with their former North American distributor, Independent Publishers Group. All of Monogatari’s books have been removed from the distributor’s site. There has been no official statement regarding the removal of the books, nor whether Monogatari has secured a different distributor. DanmeiNews has reached out to IPG, but has received no response at time of writing. A distributor works with publishers to promote and distribute their products to retailers, including online and brick and mortar. Without a distributor, large-scale order fulfillment is made less feasible.
TL;DR
Two publishing companies—Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing—formed a partnership to finance and publish multiple danmei and baihe series. A number of controversies surrounded them, ranging from accusations of machine translation, a perceived lack of professional conduct, a potentially racist logo, and alleged doxxing of critics. The two companies later dissolved their partnership, causing all books at the time to be delayed indefinitely.
As of 2025, Monogatari Novels is moving forward with publishing all previously announced series, but with new cover art and design treatments than those previously revealed. BLoved Publishing’s founder is allegedly suing Monogatari Novels after providing the money for the licenses, but having no contractual ownership of them.
The series directly involved with the partnership were How to Survive as a Villain, The Legendary Master’s Wife, Female General and Eldest Princess, and Clear and Muddy Loss of Love. No other danmei or baihe series licensed by Monogatari Novels for an English release have seen publication.
