The long-awaited second season of the Heaven Official’s Blessing / Tian Guan Ci Fu animated series—based on Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (MXTX)’s novel of the same name—will finally air in October 2023 per the official production channels. This long-awaited announcement came on August 22, 2023, a date deliberately chosen to line up with Chinese Valentine’s Day (known as Qixi).

To further add to the celebration, the Heaven Official’s Blessing audio drama finally returned from its lengthy hiatus. Season One is back online and available for purchase via the MissEvan site, and new episodes will be released twice a week starting September 2023. Although the series is only in Chinese at this time, many web browsers will be able to automatically translate the subtitles and allow international fans lured by the beautiful art and stellar voice performances to share the experience.

These announcements are very timely, as the final English volume of the Heaven Official’s Blessing novel series is due out this November. The last half of 2023 will be jam-packed with content for fans.

Heaven Official’s Blessing Vol. 8 (FINALE):

Why the Delay?

The first season of the donghua aired from October 31, 2020 to January 2, 2021. It aired weekly and clocked in at a total of eleven episodes with a special extra episode on February 14, 2021. The series aired on Bilibili’s website and app, as well as their YouTube channel. Funimation simulcast the series and later produced an English dub as well as a Season 1 DVD/Bluray boxset. The series was later released on Netflix, where it sits beside The Untamed as a fellow adaptation of a Mo Xiang Tong Xiu work. The donghua had remarkable success both at home and internationally, and the Heaven Official’s Blessing novel series racked up licensing deals and New York Times best-seller placements.

There has never been an official reason provided for season two’s delay, but fan speculation has centered on the matter of censorship. The Chinese government has grown more restrictive toward danmei adaptations since mid-2021, and this has caused cancellations and indefinite delays for many planned series. This is also likely the reason behind the delay of the release of Eternal Faith, the live-action adaptation of Heaven Official’s Blessing. Additionally, the donghua’s lead voice actor Jiang Guangtao—who voiced the main character Xie Lian—was accused of tax fraud and left the production amidst the resulting controversy. He has since been replaced in season two by Deng Youxi.

Season Two’s Long-Awaited Debut

The first whisper of season two was a trailer released in November 2021. Although it was received well, it was the last fans would hear from the series for a very long time—until a short new teaser trailer was released on Xie Lian’s birthday on July 14, 2023. A few days later, the Heaven Official’s Blessing official Twitter account dropped some exciting news: season two is coming soon! And sure enough, on August 22, 2023, they announced the series would be airing in October 2023.

As of time of writing, Funimation, Crunchyroll, and Netflix have made no public statements on whether they’ll be streaming or simulcasting the season. In the meantime, you can add the donghua to your wishlist on Bilibili.TV, subscribe to Bilibili’s YouTube channel, or follow the official TGCF Twitter for updates.
